I forgot my master password

Then the vault is gone, and we cannot help. There is no reset, no hint and no recovery. The key never leaves your Mac and we hold nothing that could open it.

This is not a limitation we plan to remove. A vault somebody else can unlock for you is a vault somebody else can be made to unlock.

What you can still do is below: get your items out with Touch ID if it was turned on, and start a new vault without deleting the old one.

1. If Touch ID was turned on: get your items out first

Touch ID opens the vault without the master password. It cannot change the master password, because that needs the old one, but it can get your things out before you start again.

  1. Open DribbleVault from your Applications folder and choose Unlock with Touch ID.
  2. Copy what you need, or use Settings › Import & Export › Export as plain text.
  3. The export is not encrypted. Import it into the new vault straight away, then delete it and empty the Bin.

A backup made now will not help: it opens with the master password you have forgotten.

2. Start a new vault on your Mac

This sets the old vault aside instead of deleting it, so if the password comes back to you later, you can put it back.

  1. Quit DribbleVault completely: ⌘Q. Closing the window is not enough.
  2. In Finder, choose Go › Go to Folder… (⇧⌘G) and paste:
    ~/Library/Application Support/com.dribblesoft.dribblevault/vaults
  3. Rename the folder default to something like forgotten-2026-09-19. Rename it, do not delete it. Do not open or edit the files inside. They are encrypted, and changing them can damage the vault.
  4. Open DribbleVault. It shows the screen for creating a new vault.
  5. Choose a new master password and write it down on paper.
  6. To use Touch ID again, turn it on in Settings › Security. Until you do, the lock screen's Touch ID button is still linked to the old vault and will not open the new one.

3. If you have a backup whose passphrase you remember

Start a new vault first (step 2), since Settings is only reachable from an unlocked vault. Then go to Settings › Backup › Restore and give it that backup's passphrase. The new, empty vault is set aside, not deleted.

If the password comes back to you

Quit DribbleVault, rename the current default folder to anything else, and rename your old folder back to default.

My licence will not install

Paste the whole block, including the -----BEGIN and -----END lines.

Nothing unlocked after installing my licence

Restart DribbleVault. Entitlements are read once at startup, deliberately — nothing should be able to observe them changing while the app is running. The licence tab says so when a restart is pending.

Can I use my licence on more than one Mac?

Yes. There is no activation, no machine limit and no call home. It is a signed file with your name on it; install it on any Mac you own. It carries your name because that is what makes people keep it to themselves.

What happens when my updates period ends?

Nothing, to what you have. The version you installed keeps working as Pro forever. A licence covers every version released inside its window; a build released after it runs as Free until you renew. Your vault is never affected either way — every password, note and file stays readable and exportable.

Is there sync between my devices?

No. One Mac, one vault. You can move an encrypted backup yourself. Sync would mean a server holding your data, which is a different product with a different threat model — if it is ever built, it will be described honestly rather than added quietly.

Touch ID is greyed out

It needs a build signed with a provisioning profile that authorises the keychain access group. If your copy shows it as unavailable, that build does not have one. Your master password works as normal.

How do I move to a new Mac?

  1. Settings › Backup › Create backup, and keep the file somewhere safe
  2. Install DribbleVault on the new Mac
  3. Settings › Backup › Restore, and give it the passphrase that backup was made with
  4. Paste your licence into Settings › Licence

The backup is encrypted and verified before a single byte is written.
